Nutrient recovery is the treatment of manure with integrated separation technologies that allow the recovery of nutrient components so they can be reused for agricultural applications. The recovery of nutrients is often part of a broader resource recovery concept that also addresses the reclamation of water or carbon based components such as organic fiber. The first commercial on-farm nutrient recovery system in North America was installed by Trident nearly 10 years ago. Since then this form of manure treatment has quickly become a leading sustainability practice that is recognized by many dairy farmers as the new standard for circular waste management.
The treatment consists of several treatment stages. Optionally it can be extended with downstream add-ons such as filtration or granulation treatment. Forms of nutrient recovery are also available in other sectors, for example at municipal waste treatment facilities that process organic food waste or sewer waste.
Our installation crew is currently in Northern Colorado installing a new nutrient recovery system on a dairy farm with a capacity for 4,000 cows. This is a green-site project and Trident has been involved in the planning and design from an early stage. Together with the dairyman Trident streamlined the entire manure handling process.
Trident has completed another nutrient recovery installation. This nutrient recovery system is at Prairies Edge Dairy Farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana.
Trident has been fortunate and honoured to be involved with a group of visionary people that put an unbelievable effort in progressing the state of technology in modern dairy farming. Prairies Edge Dairy and Midwestern Bio Ag have been working on a game-changing project that allows the concentration of nutrients from dairy cow manure to produce an organic-based fertilizer at commercial scale. On June 16, 2017 Midwest Bio-Ag invited to an Open House at the new Fertilizer Plant to celebrate the project completion, showcase process details and present its TerraNu fertilizer products.
A successful day one is wrapped up at World Pork Expo in Des Moines. Many hog farmers have connected with us to learn about ways to improve lagoon management and reduce their operational costs. Truck washout application is also a topic in many conversations and the Trident Rotary Screen is proven to be an excellent system for this kind of solid-liquid separation.

Trident’s nutrient recovery system at Seabreeze Farms in Delta, BC represents the leading standard in commercially available technology for nutrient management and recovery for livestock operations. The automated system has been in operation for more than two years. The technology allows the farm to manage their waste stream (dairy cow manure and off-farm material like food waste, which is anaerobically digested) more efficiently.
